‘Diverse voices, common ground’ – Celebrating Languages Week Scotland 2026

January 19, 2026

This year, Languages Week Scotland runs from Monday 2 to Friday 6 February 2026. The week is a national celebration of language learning and multilingualism. It’s a brilliant chance for schools, nurseries, childminders and families to spotlight the many languages spoken in Scotland – and to give children a positive, playful experience of languages.

The theme for 2026 is ‘Diverse voices, common ground’, which celebrates languages and how they can help children to share who they are, share in each other’s languages and cultures, and find common ground through stories, songs, culture and everyday life.

How can you take part? (school or home)

There are so many ways to take part. Check out https://www.languagesweekscot.org for lots of ideas for schools, families and communities. Here are just a few ways to get involved:

  • Create a ‘Languages in our community’ wall: Invite children and families to add a greeting, a favourite word, or a short phrase from any language spoken or heard at home.
  • Try a phrase of the day: Pick one practical phrase (hello / please / thank you / my name is…) and practise it with actions. Repetition and movement help it to stick.
  • Bring stories to life: Choose a short story or picture book and learn key vocabulary for characters, colours and feelings. Act it out with simple call-and-response lines.
  • Make it musical: Use songs and chants to introduce rhythm and pronunciation. Add actions so everyone can join in, even before they’re confident speaking.
  • Do a ‘mini-role play’: Set up a café, shop or classroom game with 5–8 target phrases. Children love having a ‘script’.

How can Kidslingo help during Languages Week Scotland?

At Kidslingo, we love languages and we’re passionate about helping children to become global citizens! We work with schools, nurseries and childminders, in community venues, private homes and online.

Our aim is to inspire young children, from birth to 11 years, to love languages from the very start of their language learning journeys.

We bring French and Spanish to life through our multi-sensory approach, built for young learners. Our sessions are designed to be inclusive, confidence-building and fun!

The Kidslingo programme is fully designed to meet the requirements of the Curriculum for Excellence.
